we want to be seen

Our first campaign marked the anniversary of the tragic death of Josephine Gilbert.

The number of cyclists who have been killed or seriously injured in Derby and Derbyshire has steadily increased since 2015. In 2019, it was 119% above the target.

We wanted to raise awareness of the need to see, give space to and protect girls and women who cycle.

Thank you to Bhee Gill, Mair Perkins, Joss Winter and Bethany Pearson for their contributions.

at 1.54pm on the 21st January 2020, Josephine Gilbert was killed while cycling

25 year old Josephine Gilbert was an experienced cyclist out on her daily ride from her grandparent’s home.

A lorry driver hit her on Ashbourne Road near to Markeaton Island. She suffered catastrophic head injuries and died instantly.

Prosecutor Lisa Hardy said,

“She was wearing bright orange cycling clothing, a pink and black cycling helmet and was riding straight. There was no traffic coming towards her, visibility was good and he had 17 seconds of her in his vision to move out and overtake her if he wished.”

On 18th December 2020, the lorry driver was sentenced to just three years and nine months in prison and he has been disqualified from driving for only five years and three months.
