fix | community dr.bikes

We toured the city this summer to reach as many people as possible with our free & friendly bike fixing service.

We conducted a thorough safety check of all bikes and did what we could to resolve any problems including replacing inner tubes, gear/brake cables or brake pads.

Our Dr.Bikes were for the local community and we encouraged those attending to walk/cycle to the park if possible.

Saturday 27th June 2021 | Stockbrook Park | 2-6pm
Saturday 24th July 2021 | Arboretum Park | 2-6pm
Saturday 28th August 2021 | Alvaston Park | 2-6pm

learn | maintenance workshops

Cycle maintenance is often identified as one of the main barriers to more women and non-binary people cycling so we broke down those barriers in an accessible and fun way through our basic cycle maintenance workshops.

What we covered

– Cycle Safety Checks
– Puncture Repair
– Tyre Assessment
– Oiling and cleaning the chain
– Setting up your cycle for maximum comfort and efficiency

Childcare

Kids were welcome to come along and join in with the session. Whilst the children remained the responsibility of their adult, a DBS checked volunteer was on hand to provide activities such as Lego and colouring so attendees could fully focus on their cycles.

What was required

– A roadworthy cycle
– Your own refreshments
– Comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting mucky
– Rain/Sun Protection

COVID information

All communal equipment was disinfected before & after use, and we provided hand sanitiser & wipes. We maintained social distancing and asked attendees not to attend if they had any COVID-19 symptoms.

The classes were led by our friendly qualified female mechanic Lucy and supported by our lovely male ally & cycle expert Hardy Saleh from Derby Bike PopUp.

This class was aimed at those with no previous cycle mechanic experience. Those who attended learned at their own pace in a small group, with a break for snacks & chats.

We provided all the tools and necessary equipment needed for the course. Attendees were also given a free ‘Essential Bike Repair Kit’ to take home including a hand pump, oil, tyre levers, spanner, puncture repair kit and a handy bike bag.

Saturday 17th July 2021 | Normanton Park | 2 – 4.30pm
Saturday 7th August 2021 | Stockbrook Park | 2 – 4.30pm
Saturday 11th September 2021 | Arboretum Park | 2 – 4.30pm

Note: These classes are for anyone who identifies as female and non-binary people who feel comfortable in spaces that centre the experience of women

ride | cycling skills courses

We know that riding on the roads can feel scary which is why we’ve created a free bespoke course to build up your knowledge and confidence over three sessions. By the time they finished, they were confidently cruising the streets on the school run, to the shops, university, work and more!

Led by our qualified national standard cycling instructor & ride leader Lucy, each course consisted of a small group of 5 wonderful women & non-binary people. The course was aimed at those who are already able to balance and ride a cycle, and who can control the cycle by starting, stopping and turning.

1

session no.1:
back in the saddle

– Understanding of equipment & clothing
– Simple ABCD cycle check
– Getting on/off & pedal ready
– Demonstrate use of gears & brakes
– Understanding how to look & signal
– Knowledge of how to share space with other road users

session no.2:

The courses were for the local community and we encouraged attendees to walk/cycle to the park if possible.

got a question, or maybe a suggestion?

We run everything we do in a friendly and inclusive way so everyone feels welcome but we know signing up to classes and courses can make some people feel a bit nervous. We’re here to help you to feel as supported and listened to as possible.
